Today I was reading a break down from ifixit.com on Apple’s new Retina Macbook Pro. There are some SERIOUS negatives in regards to this laptop. So much in fact, that I had to write this post to vent… so my apologies on that part.
Lets get started: While the retina is super nice, crisp, and clear it’s significantly more expensive. It’s not protected by glass, and it’s so compact that if anything fails in the display, the entire thing will need replacement… no bueno #1.
Major no bueno with regards to Memory. The RAM is soldered to the logic board! No upgrading the ram, no replacing it… freakin’ lame.
Another major no bueno with regards to Hard Drive… there isn’t one. It’s a 512 GB flash module, which is proprietary. At the moment, there is no way to upgrade your hard drive with this version of the macbook, and when they do come out with a way to upgrade, it’ll be with their own, super expensive modules. No bueno #3!
4th No bueno – The battery isn’t easily replaceable. The unibody made it slightly more difficult to replace the battery, since you have to take some extra steps in opening up the laptop to replace it. But now… well… now the battery is glued to the case. That’s right, no screws, freaking glue! What’s worse than that? Oh yeah, they put the track pad under the battery, so to replace or repair the track pad, you’ve got to remove the GLUED DOWN battery without severing the super thin and fragile track pad cable.
Now I can’t get a retina display Apple… thanks to your stupid design that’s supposed to be “state-of-the-whatever”!
I seriously can’t buy a laptop that disallows the ability to replace the battery, ram and hard drive. Also, now I’m going to get all kinds of crap at work since I’m known as the “Apple Fan Boy”… I’ll be getting questions like “Hey Jake, did you hear about Apple and their retarded design on the Retina Macbook?” It’s going to be so annoying…
Ok, I’m done venting… no Retina for me… Apple took a turn for the worse, and Jobs is dearly missed at this point.
